The GEC reduction gear box

This gearbox comprises a train of gears for use with a fractional horse power electric motor. The geared motor is supplied for use in an office business machine. 

The moulded gears were developed to replace metal ones, a) to give quieter running - this is important in an office environment, and b) because they were cheaper. Machine-cut gears are very expensive, and moulded alternatives offered a cost saving of the order of 10 1. This is important in this cost-conscious market.
