HBCD has been used as an additive flame retardant for more than 20 years. Its main use is in the construction industry, where it is used in polystyrene foams, which are a part of the thermal isolations, and even small concentrations provide sufficient protection against burning. The second major application of HBCD is in the upholstery and textile industries. Products in which the HBCD occurs, for example, include upholstered furniture, various textiles, car seats and upholstery, insulation in trucks and caravans as well as many types of building materials. Unlike other flame retardants, HBCD is not used in electronic circuits. 

Prepared generally by ester interchange from polyvinylacelate (ethanoate) using methanol and base also formed by hydrolysis of the acetate by NaOH and water. The properties of the poly(vinyl alcohol) depend upon the structure of the original polyvinyl acetate. Forms copolymers. Used as a size in the textile industry, in aqueous adhesives, in the production of polyvinyl acetates (e.g. butynal) for safety glasses. U.S. production 1980... 

There are two categories of white oils technical white oils and medicinal white oils. The technical white oils, which are already highly dearomatized, are used for specialized lubricants, particularly in the textile industry, and also as components in cosmetics, as plasticizers in the rubber or plastics industries, or as emulsion bases for certain pulverized agriculture products. The medicinal white oils, whose dearomatization is pushed further still, are used in pharmaceuticals, or in the food industry, wherever residual oils might be in contact with food. 

The 2-imino-4-thiazolines may be used as ultraviolet-light stabilizers of polyolefin compositions (1026). 2-Aminothiazole improves adhesive properties of wood to wood glue (271). Cbmpound 428 exhibits antioxidant properties (Scheme 242) (1027). Ammonium N-(2-thiazolyl)dithio-carbamate (429) is a bactericide and fungicide used in industrial products such as lumber, paint, plastics, and textiles (1037). Compound 430 is reported (1038) to form an excellent volume of foam coating in aluminum pans when ignited with propane. 

HoUow fibers can be prepared from almost any spiunable material. The fiber can be spun directly as a membrane or as a substrate which is post-treated to achieve desired membrane characteristics. Analogous fibers have been spun in the textile industry and are employed for the production of high bulk, low density fabrics. The technology employed in the fabrication of synthetic fibers appUes also to the spinning of hoUow-fiber membranes from natural and synthetic polymers. 

Tetrahydronaphthalene [119-64-2] (Tetralin) is a water-white Hquid that is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in methyl alcohol, and completely soluble in other monohydric alcohols, ethyl ether, and most other organic solvents. It is a powerhil solvent for oils, resins, waxes, mbber, asphalt, and aromatic hydrocarbons, eg, naphthalene and anthracene. Its high flash point and low vapor pressure make it usehil in the manufacture of paints, lacquers, and varnishes for cleaning printing ink from rollers and type in the manufacture of shoe creams and floor waxes as a solvent in the textile industry and for the removal of naphthalene deposits in gas-distribution systems (25). The commercial product typically has a tetrahydronaphthalene content of >97 wt%, with some decahydronaphthalene and naphthalene as the principal impurities. 

Uron Resins. In the textile industry, the term uron resin usually refers to the mixture of a minor amount of melamine resin and so-called uron, which in turn is predorninantly N,]S -bis(methoxymethyl)uron [7388-44-5] plus 15—25% methylated urea—formaldehyde resins, a by-product. 

RCF is sold in a variety of forms, such as loose fiber, blanket, boards, modules, cloth, cements, putties, paper, coatings, felt, vacuum-formed shapes, rope, braid, tape, and textiles. The products are principally used for industrial appHcations as insulation in furnaces, heaters, kiln linings, furnace doors, metal launders, tank car insulation, and other uses up to 1400°C. RCF-consuming industries include ferrous and nonferrous metals, petrochemical, ceramic, glass, chemical, fertiH2er, transportation, constmction, and power generation/incineration. Some newer uses include commercial fire protection and appHcations in aerospace, eg, heat shields and automotive, eg, catalytic converters, metal reinforcement, heat shields, brake pads, and airbags. 

The development of the submerged fermentation technique resulted in tremendous progress in the field of industrial enzymology. This technique was used in the early 1950s for the production of bacterial amylases for the textile industry.
