The test of normality (Shapiro and Wirk) indicates that this distribution is not Gaussian the test by j Dixon indicates that the maximum value is not realistic. [Pg.50]

Mendal et al. (1993) compared eight tests of normality to detect a mixture consisting of two normally distributed components with different means but equal variances. Fisher s skewness statistic was preferable when one component comprised less than 15% of the total distribution. When the two components comprised more nearly equal proportions (35-65%) of the total distribution, the Engelman and Hartigan test (1969) was preferable. For other mixing proportions, the maximum likelihood ratio test was best. Thus, the maximum likelihood ratio test appears to perform very well, with only small loss from optimality, even when it is not the best procedure. [Pg.904]

Some statistical tests are specific for evaluation of normality (log-normality, etc., normality of a transformed variable, etc.), while other tests are more broadly applicable. The most popular test of normality appears to be the Shapiro-Wilk test. Specialized tests of normality include outlier tests and tests for nonnormal skewness and nonnormal kurtosis. In practice, it is not possible to know either the true mean fjL or the standard deviation a since there will be a limited number of values of n. Thus s must be calculated. Elsewhere, when a large number of repetitive measurements concerning the same sample is available, the Chi-square test for the standard deviation (test) is used to ascertain if the frequency distribution (that is the number of times where a value is recorded) differs in a significant manner from that of a population, which follows the normal distribution law. A second approach is to ratio every variable against a common divisor. The covariances of these log-ratios are presented as a log-ratio covariance matrix.
