Epoxy Terrazzos

Epoxy Resins. Epoxy resins (qv) or polyether resins are thermosets used as the binder for terrazzo dooring. The epoxy resin often is made from epichlorohydrin and bisphenol A. An excess of epichlorohydrin is used to assure that the intermediate product contains terminal epoxide groups. 

Epoxy resin-welded PVC sheets and epoxy terrazzo are generally recommended.

With the development of epoxy resin systems as toppings, it was only natural that these systems would have been adapted in terrazzo applications. The advantages of epoxy-based terrazzo include rapid cure, as compared to conventional cement terrazzo, and lightweight of 1-3 lbs. per square foot, as compared to 10-20 lbs. per square foot for Portland cement terrazzo.

The range of flooring material increases in direct proportion to the number of new polymers daily added to the market. In addition to the common floor surfacing materials (e.g., ceramic tile, wood block, wood strip and board, marble, granolithic, terrazzo, linoleum, and cork tiles), new materials are used, such as PVC tiles, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, vinyl-asbestos tiles, PVC welded sheet, synthetic fiber-epoxy polymers, PP, and polyurethane.
