There is another reason for believing that life evolved at low temperatures, whether in the oceans or in lakes. All of the template-directed reactions that must have led to the emergence of biological organization take place only below the melting temperature of the appropriate organized polynucleotide structure. These temperatures range from 0°C, or lower, to perhaps 35°C, in the case of polynucleotide-mononucleotide helices. [Pg.88]

The synthesis of macrocycles with the aid of the dilution principle still remains a dominating cyclization method although there have been many attempts to avoid the standard procedure, i.e., the simultaneous addition of reactants to the reaction medium (see Sect. 4). The dilution principle can be avoided in some cases [90,92] by application of template-directed reactions and/or by use of the rigid group principle . [Pg.30]

As a striking exanqrle, photo-initiated chlorination (Scheme 21) of 3 mM (19) with 1.5 equiv. PhICb led to the 9-chloro derivative (20) in >98% yield with Ag this was converted to the A -alkene. Again the template-directed reaction overcomes the normal reactivity of the substrate, but at 21 mM (19) undirected reactions start to compete and some 6-chloro steroid is also formed. A pyridine A(-oxide template, that can use three-electron bonding to complex a chlorine to the oxygen atom, seems to be almost as effective. Furthermore, an imidazole template in compound (21) directs chlorination at C-9 with similar efficiency to the templates previously examined, and (21) is particularly easily prepared using caibonyldiimidazole. [Pg.49]

Metal ions can act as templates, directing reactions between the precursors of polydentate ligands or the formation of polynuclear structures. [Pg.94]

In the cases considered thus far in this review, the templates have acted in a kinetic way once the product of the template-directed reaction is formed, the equilibrium processes regarding the product distribution are limited. In all these systems, kinetic and thermodynamic effects can play roles of varying importance. This fact was recognized long ago by Busch, who discerned between kinetic templates —in which transition states to products... [Pg.1347]

An example of a DNA network with multiple catalytic routes was studied by Achilles and von Kiedrowski. They analyzed a seff-repUcating system starting from three building blocks, which could form a five different member network with six catalytic pathways. Another example was presented by Sievers and von Kiedrowski, who studied a quaternary system of hexadeoxynucleotide analogs. They demonstrated that cross-catalytic replication can be observed in template-directed reaction systems if the reciprocal template effects are similar in efficiency and if the reaction system is not dominated by autocatalytic syntheses of self-complementary products, which occur as parallel reactions. [Pg.3052]

Another elegant design reported by Yashima became an important step for mimicking the function of DNA by using carboxylate-amidinium duplexes. Early studies have shown the ability to form this type of duplex through dynamic imine bond formations with a template. ° Recently, template-directed reactions with diastereoselec-tivity have been demonstrated (Figure 9.13). An amidinium template is used to bind to two carboxylates, each of which bears one aldehyde functional group. The chiral bisamine was then introduced to form imine bonds in a step-wise manner with the two aldehydes to eventually form a duplex. [Pg.160]
