Template Chemistry

The use of metals for prearranging reaction centers as neighboring groups has a special value in the production of macrocycles (template effect). Although these ligands can be sometimes prepared directly, the addition of metal ion during the synthesis will often increase the yield, modify the stereochemical nature of the product, or even be essential in the buildup of the macrocycle. There have been few mechanistic studies of these processes. The alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions can promote the formation of benzo[18]crown-6 in methanol  [Pg.301]

The value of varies from 1.2 x 10 (Sr ) to 17(Cs ). There are two opposing factors influencing this ratio. There is a rate-enhancing effect due to the increased proximity of the chain ends in (6.5). This is offset by a rate retardation which arises because of the reduced inherent nucleophilicity of ArO which ion-pairs with The formation of the in- [Pg.302]

This particular function, and also others of the metal, are also beautifully utilized in the work on the chemical synthesis of corrins (Fig. 6.2). In the synthesis of 2, a metal, Co(ll), Ni(ll) or Pd(ll), is required to stabilize the precursor 1, which would otherwise be extremely labile configurationally and constitutionally. As added bonuses, the metal ion helps to activate the methylene carbon for its attack on the iminoester carbon, and also forces the four nitrogens into a planar conformation, thereby bringing the condensation centers of rings A and B close together. This is strikingly shown by X-ray structural determination of 1. With [Pg.302]

Despite the current problems concerning RNA at the origin of life—in particular, the origin of the first RNA molecules and enzyme-free replication—the idea of an RNA world turned out to be a very useful concept. It initiated the search for molecular templates and created an entirely new field which may be characterized as template chemistry (Orgel, 1992). A series of systematic studies were performed, for example, on the properties of nucleic acids with modified sugar moieties (Eschenmoser, 1993). This studies revealed the special role of ribose and... [Pg.170]

One of the most critical limitations of a DNA-encoded library is DNA itself It requires an aqueous media and mild environmental conditions to ensure DNA s chemical stability and hybridization fidelity. Naturally, many useful chemical reactions cannot be directly applied. Liu and co-workers have adapted a variety of organic reactions into DNA-compatible format however, a survey of the structures synthesized by DNA encoding indicates the compounds made by DNA-templated chemistry are still being confined within the paradigm of pep-tidic structures, an undesired structural feature for drug molecules. [Pg.297]

Figure 64. The most interesting property of p-RNA so far discovoed is its remarkable pairing selectivity. The non-pairing of guanine with itself is especially significant in context of the question, whether p-RNA base sequences can rqrlicate themselves by template chemistry. Figure 64. Surfactant templating chemistry can be extended to many nonsilicate compositions after modifications to the synthesis route. These materials are less structurally stable than the mesoporous silicates, which is attributed to the thinness of the amorphous pore walls ( 1 to 2 nm). Stucky and coworkers [85,86] showed that this problem could be mitigated by preparing the materials with thicker walls. To prepare mesoporous WO3, they dissolved a poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer and WCle salt in ethanol, and dried the resulting solution in open air. The tungsten salt reacted with moisture to undergo hydrolysis and condensation reactions. These chemical reactions caused the eventual formation of amorphous WO3 around triblock copolymer micelle-like domains, and after calcination at 400 C, a mesoporous WO3 with thick, nanocrystalline walls ( 5 nm) and surface area of 125 m /g was formed. [Pg.45]

Interesting enough, mirrorless laser emission has also been observed. Mesostructured silica waveguides were fabricated with a combination of acidic sol-gel block copolymer templating chemistry and soft lithography. Rhodamine 6G was incorporated in the structure and mirrorless amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was observed with a relatively low threshold [104]. [Pg.946]
