Stecl a was quenched and tempered to a tensile, strength of 830 N/min and a yield strength of 670 N/inin, and steel b to 620 and 450 N/mm, respectively. It was considered that the maximum thickness of metal that could be welded onsite was 38 mm.

Geber takes for granted that the supreme aim of the science is the removing of imperfections of metals so that they shall become perfect. He accepts the existence of the philosopher s stone and of the elixirs, red and white, that in these elixirs red and white there is no other thing than quicksilver and sulphur, and because all metallic bodies are compounded of quicksilver and sulphur—pure or impure—accidentally (superficially) and not in their first nature, therefore by convenient preparation it is possible to take away such impurity. The natural principles of the metals are three sulphur, arsenic and quicksilver. . . . Sulphur is a fatness of the earth thickened until it be hardened and made dry, and when it is hardened it is called sulphur. . . . Arsenic is a subtle matter like to sulphur therefore it need not be otherwise defined than sulphur. . . . Quicksilver is a viscous water united in the bowels of the earth with white subtle earth until the moist is tempered with the dry. Expressions such as these illustrate how completely the author is dependent upon the conventional chemical philosophy of the Arabian alchemists. 

It was noted in McCance s obituary of Desch that Desch did not find it easy to work with Professor Huntington who was quick tempered and exacting. 45(a) Macadam undertook accurate analysis of metal samples, which were then examined metallo-graphically by Desch. In January 1909, Macadam and Desch were married. McCance quotes Huntington that Cecil Desch had robbed him of his best assistant. 45(a) The Desch family moved shortly afterwards to Glasgow, where Desch had been appointed as Lecturer in metallurgical chemistry. Macadam had two daughters, and the only other reference to her was at a later appointment of Desch at the University of Sheffield, that ... 

Improving the efficiency of metals removal using wetlands has proved to be difficult. Detailed assessments of long-term performance of wetland systems with a focus on metal-retention mechanisms, eutrophication, and flushing rates, and their effects on downgradient ecosystems are required if wetland treatment is to be applied in temperate regions.
