Table XII gives the half-lives of several initiators which are of interest in suspension polymerizations of vinyl chloride. While these data are a rough guide to the temperature-time relationship to be expected, many other factors need to be considered. For example, lauroyl peroxide brings about a polymerization process of vinyl chloride in which the maximum rate takes place between 60% and 80 o conversion whereas the rate of polymerization with diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate is much more uniform throughout the process. Also, particle structure varies with the initiator used [139]. The development of initiators has been in the direction of molecules with unsymmetrical substitution about the peroxide bridge. Silicone adhesives are generally applied in a liquid and uncured state. It is therefore the physical and chemical properties of the polymers, or more precisely of the polymer formulation, that guide the various processes leading to the formation of the cured silicone network. The rate of heat conduction is further complicated by the effect of sunshine onto the outside. Solar radiation reaches the earth s surface at a maximum intensity of about 0.9 kW/ m. The amount of this absorbed by a plane surface will depend on the absorption coefficient and the angle at which the radiation strikes. The angle of the sun s rays to a surface (see Figure 26.1) is always changing, so this must be estimated on an hour-to-hour basis. Various methods of reaching an estimate of heat flow are used, and the sol-air temperature (see CIBSE Guide, A5) provides a simplification of the factors involved. All these thermal properties relate to how to determine the best useful processing conditions to meet product performance requirements. There is a maximum temperature or, to be more precise, a maximum time-to-temperature relationship for all materials preceding loss of performance or decomposition. The oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde was choosen as model reaction by BASF for performance evaluation of micro reactors [1, 49-51, 108]. In the industrial process a methanol-air mixture of equimolecular ratio of methanol and oxygen is guided through a shallow catalyst bed of silver at 150 °C feed temperature, 600-650 °C exit temperature, atmospheric pressure and a contact time of 10 ms or less. Conversion amounts to 60-70% at a selectivity of about 90%. [Pg.314]

An analysis of conversion, by-product level, reaction time and reaction rate showed that the results achieved in micro reactors and conventional equipment are competitive, i.e. were similar. As tendencies, it seemed that the micro reactor can lead to a lower by-product level owing to its better temperature guiding and that reaction times can be further shortened. However, the corresponding results are not absolutely comparable in terms of reaction conditions and hence further data are required here. [Pg.459]
