Temperature swing reactors

Four basic regenerative procedures - or hybrids thereof - can be used in conjunction with adsorptive reactor operation pressure swing, temperature swing, elution, and reaction. [Pg.220]

Thermal shock resistance. Temperature swing as part of the normal cycles of operation or regeneration of the membranes or membrane reactors can lead to deleterious thermal shock. The materials for the various components in a membrane reactor should be carefully selected to impart good thermal sh k resistance. This is particularly important for high temperature reactions. Also listed in Table 9.5 is a summary of various membrane materials along with qualitative description of their resistance to thermal shock. Again, the available data apply to dense materials. While various metal oxides have been made into commercial inorganic membranes, they tend to be affected by thermal shock much more than other ceramic materials. [Pg.382]

In this work we present results obtained with the YSZ reactor operated in the hatch mode with electrochemical oxygen addition, and with the quartz plug flow reactor operated in the continuous-flow steady-state mode. In the case of continuous flow operation, the molecular sieve trap comprised two packed bed units in parallel in a swing-bed arrangement (Fig. 1), that is, one unit was maintained at low temperature (<70°C) to continuously trap the reactor products while the other was heated for -30 min to 300°C to release the products in a slow stream of He. [Pg.390]

Increasing the reactor temperature setpoint increases the production rate of vinyl acetate, so there must ultimately be net increases in all three fresh reactant feed streams. Oxygen and ethylene flows respond fairly quickly within about 20 minutes. However, the acetic acid feed actually decreases for the first 60 minutes in response to an increase in column base level. These results demonstrate the slow dynamics of the liquid recycle loop and illustrate the need for controlling the total acetic acid flow to the reactor so that the separation section does not see these large swings in load ( snowball effect"). Then the product gas is fed to a low-temperature reactor where a Cu/Zn-Al2O3 particulate WGS catalyst works at about 200°C. Outlet CO concentration is decreased to <0.5%, while the remaining CO, which can poison downstream ammonia or methanol synthesis catalysts, is removed by pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit. This method exploits the adsorption capacity of different molecular sieves or active carbon, which selectively permit the crossover of hydrogen but not of the other compounds present in the effluents.
