Temperature overrun

The fixed-bed reactor has a 2-in. inside diameter and a 60-in. inside length for a volume of 3 L (Figure 2). It is constructed of A-286 high-temperature alloy which can be operated at 5000 psig at 1000°F. It can withstand temperature overruns up to 1500°F for short periods. A thermowell runs through the center of the catalyst bed the entire length of the reactor. Heat is supplied to the reactor in five separately controlled heating zones. [Pg.127]

Sometimes plots which are produced from the oxidation experiments cannot be evaluated as described above. That happens when the generation of heat occurs so fast that the sample temperature overruns the pre-set heating rate. Smaller sample weights and/or faster heating rates may help to avoid this effect. The DuPont software allows the diagram of heat flow versus time to be called up (to the monitor). After marking the peak maxima, the diagram can be rescaled to heat flow versus temperature and the correct peak maximum temperatures can then be defined. Unfortunately this information cannot be processed by the DSCASTMKin software, so the data are used in external computation of the reaction kinetics. [Pg.429]

Chemical parameters (e.g., partition coefficients, decay rates, temperature and moisture effects) are not usually considered as calibration parameters because they can be measured in a laboratory moreover, calibration is usually not possible due to lack of observed data. However, most scientists will agree that extrapolation of laboratory parameter measurements to field conditions is a risky assumption. If observed chemical data are available, refinement of initial chemical parameters through calibration should be considered. Errors in calibration-derived parameter values are often a function of how much calibration was performed or errors in system inputs and/or outputs. In many modeling efforts, conscientious model users will often overrun the calibration budget because of the natural tendency to continue to make calibration runs in an effort to minimize discrepancies between simulated and observed values. Parameter errors associated with calibration are more often a result of missing and/or erroneous data either as system inputs or outputs. [Pg.161]

A combustion wave is established in an explosive medium by application of a local source of ignition. As heat and, possibly, chain carriers of various kinds flow from the source into the adjacent medium, reaction is initiated in the layer next to the source which in turn becomes a source for igniting the next layer, and so on. Let us consider a mass element of the unburned mixture being overrun by the combustion wave. The reaction rate is virtually zero at the initial temperature but increases with temperature at... [Pg.16]

By mixing the correct proportions of salt and ice, the temperature will get down to about — 20 (the eutectic temperature). This freezes the mixture into ice cream, while shaking stops the ice crystals becoming too large and mixes in some air so that the ice cream is not too hard. It is difficult to achieve a high overrun using this method. The best results are achieved with Mix 2 since it is already aerated. [Pg.175]

To investigate the effect of overrun, temperature etc. on the hardness of ice cream. [Pg.179]

Repeat using ice creams with different overruns, or use the same ice cream but let it warm up between sets of measurements. Plot a graph of the penetration depth against overrun (which you can measure using the method of Experiment 14) or temperature. [Pg.180]

The specified highest surface temperatures must not be exceeded during an intended operation. An overrun of limit temperatures is only permitted if the manufacturer has provided additional special measures of protection. [Pg.152]

Structural reliability methods have been applied to estimate runway-overrun probabilities and were shown to be suitable for this purpose. In particular, the calculated sensitivities and FORM importance measures support the interpretation and further development of the model. With the help of the FORM importance measures, one can simplify the model by modeling the quantities of minor importance deterministically. We have found that the parameters Temperature , Pressure , Reverser deployment , Spoiler deployment and End breaking may be modeled deterministically without inducing a large error. This does, however, not imply that the influence of these quantities is small. It can only be concluded that the uncertainty associated with the quantity is not significant. The parameter sensitivities were in this paper calculated based on the samples obtained with subset simulation. These parameter sensitivities describe the effect of a change of the mean or standard deviation on the probability of failure. We presented the parameter sensitivities in the form of elasticities, which are typically easier to interpret. From the results it can be seen that the variables, which are of main importance according to the FORM importance measures, are... [Pg.2041]

However, where cell tissue maybe destroyed by freezing there are limitations to the technique, since low temperatures may not be used at the start of a run. In many cases, this means that the duration of the initial transient is likely to overrun the transition of interest so lower scan... [Pg.82]
