This case study was prepared on the basis of the existing literature on the mobile cellular telephony industry complemented by extensive non-structured interviev/s with key-officials from telecom equipment producers and telecom operators. The cellular mobile telephone industry has attracted many researchers since it became successful internationally. There are two strands of literature. First, there ai e econometric estimations of diffusion models.These formal diffusion studies were enabled (or induced) by the availability of time series data on the number of subscribers for almost all countries published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). They focus on the diffusion pattern of mobile phones within countries, while the lag between the diffusion in countries was not explained and the different cellular standards not taken into account.
