This formula was originally designed by Marilyn Levy to record nuclear blasts on conventional films. It is capable of recording light over a 20-stop range. With modern films, the results are low in contrast. However, with films such as Kodak Technical Pan (discontinued), it produces a full gray tonal scale.

Lithium dispersion can be safely destroyed by carefully adding it in small portions to a large excess of technical tert-butyl alcohol in a metal pan. If too much lithium is added at one time, the reaction with the ferf-butyl alcohol can become very vigorous. Under these circumstances, a fire can be avoided by covering the pan with a second, larger metal pan or with an asbestos sheet.

The first technical process involved heating phthalonitrile with copper bronze or copper(I)chloride at 200 to 240°C in copper pans. Several variations of this technique were developed in Germany prior to the Second World War. The reaction was performed either without or in the presence of a solvent. A basic distinction is commonly made between the baking process and the solvent process both may be carried out either by continuous or by batch technique. 

We will now attempt to evolve, from the laboratory apparatus which we have described, the simplest form of apparatus suitable for technical purposes.
