Early statutory definitions of high-level waste are contained in the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act of 1972 (MPRSA, 1972) and the West Valley Demonstration Project Act of 1980 (WVDPA, 1980). These definitions are consistent with the definition developed by AEC. 

In addition to specifying the lower limit on concentrations of alpha-emitting transuranium radionuclides, this definition specifies their minimum half-life. In contrast to the earliest definition developed by AEC, this definition does not include waste that contains high concentrations of long-lived, alpha-emitting non-transuranium radionuclides (e.g., 233U). 

A new-generation RDD has been announced to be under development as a joint effort of the Texas A M Transportation Institute (TTI), the Texas Department of Transportation, the Center for Transportation Research at The University of Texas and Industrial Vehicles International. The device is called Total Pavement Acceptance Device (TPAD), also known as the RDD. The TPAD is a multi-function device that integrates a deflection-measuring system with GPR and high-definition video imaging of pavements (TTI 2013) (see Figure 16.52).
