An alternative route of taxol production under investigation entails the use of plant cell culture techniques. Plant cell culture is considered to be an economically viable production route for plant-derived drugs, if the drug commands a market value in excess of 1000 2000/kg. While many commonly used plant-derived metabolites fall into this category, plant cell culture has not... 

Plant cell culture might be classified as fermentation or production from a biological or vegetable source. It is used for Taxol production (see above) and, by the Japanese, to produce shikonin, a red pigment with anti-inflammatory properties.

Confirmation of taxol production by H10BA2 followed the protocol established in our investigation of taxol production by T. andreanae [1]. HPLC columns were calibrated with authentic taxol to determine retention times, and appropriate fungal eluants were examined by TLC, CIEIA and mass spectrometry [1]. It was obvious from the blank titers that these consistent augmentations were not simply the result of yew-derived taxol. We are currently attempting to isolate and characterize the component in the aqueous fraction of yew broth responsible for increasing taxol production.
