Analysis The chemical analysis of wood is carried out by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry) standards. These methods can be summarized as in Table 1 following milling to 40 mesh (400 pm) and air drying.

The most comprehensive set of test methods for calcium carbonate has been assembled by the Pulverized Limestone Division of the National Stone Association. Methods for particle size, brightness, +325 mesh (44 pm), and percentage of calcium carbonate have been published standards are available and have been well characterized (5). The Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) has published methods for calcium carbonate used in the paper industry (6).

This study was part of a more extensive investigation conducted in 1967 and previously published (15). Since the object was to compare rankings of papers by multitemperature estimates of room temperature degradation rates with rankings by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) method of assessing retention of folding endurance (16), ovens at all temperatures were operated under arid conditions. Physical and chemical properties of the papers discussed are listed in Table III. 

In 1948, he received the coveted TAPPI medal, the highest award given by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, and, in 1952, he received the Alexander-Mitscherlich Commemorative Medal given for outstanding service by the German Verein der Zellstoff und Papier-Chemi-ker und -Ingenieure, of which he was an honorary member.
