Talc filled grades

The mineral, talc and, especially, fibreglass-filled grades are more rigid and have better behaviour and lower creep when the temperature rises.

Polyphenylene sulfide is a high temperature, stiff, fire-resistant, chemically resistant plastic, which has a very low melt viscosity and accepts fillers and reinforcing agents very well. Talc, china clay, dolomite, quartz and glass fibre filled grades are all available but volumes are very small and the situation changes very rapidly. 

Control of the average particle size, the particle size distribution, the purity and the aspect ratio of the filler is necessary to achieve consistent product quality in talc filled PP. In some grades of talc filled PP, water absorption may be an important factor. This will affect the surface appearance of the moulded product and the adhesion of the resin to the filler. 

The main applications for talc filled PP grades are in car heater casing, motor housing, dryer drums, textile bobbins, industrial and agriculture plant components. Talc filled PP sheet is used as an alternative to carton board.

The main fields of application of particulate filled polymers is shown in Figure 2. As was mentioned earlier, the major benefit of the application of fillers and reinforcement is increased stiffness and HDT. Specific applications which must be mentioned here are garden furniture (CaC03), air-filter covers, heater boxes (talc) for cars, washing machine soap dispensers (talc), etc. Bumpers are usually made from multi-component PP systems containing a PP homo- or copolymer, an elastomer and a filler.
