Tactile stimulation

Benzodiazepines are useful as orally administered premedications. They are also used intravenously in doses that produce conscious sedation rather than hypnosis. Sedated patients tolerate unpleasant procedures (e.g., wound repair, bronchoscopy, angiography) while maintaining cardiorespiratory function and the ability to respond to tactile stimulation or verbal commands. 

Emergence delirium with restlessness, disorientation and unpleasant dreams or hallucinations may occur for up 24 hours following ketamine administration. Their incidence is reduced by psychological preparation of the patient, avoidance of verbal and tactile stimulation during the recovery period, or by concomitant administration of opioids, benzodiazepines, propofol or physostigmine. However, unpleasant dreams may persist.

We are all aware of the importance of tactile stimulation or touch. Babies and young anjmals do not thrive unless cuddled by their mothers, and individuals so deprived often go on to develop behavioural problems in adult life. When something hurts we instinctively rub it better, and the comforting hug directly conveys sympathy in times of crisis. 

The most worrying adverse effect related to phenol injection is dysesthesia, caused by involvement of sensory nerve axons when perineural injection is attempted. Dysesthesia has been reported from a few days to about 2 weeks after injection most patients describe a neuropathic component, including a burning pain with hght tactile stimulation and involvement of only a small portion of the sensory distribution of the nerve that was blocked (22). 

Static tactile Stimulation that is a slow local mechanical deformation of the skin. It varies the deformation amplitude directly rather than the amphtude of vibration. This is normal touch for grasping...
