Cardiopulmonary arrest in adults usually results from arrhythmias. The most common arrhythmias are ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia (PVT), often in patients after myocardial infarction (MI) or pulmonary embolism (PE). In children, cardiopulmonary arrest is often the terminal event of progressive shock or respiratory failure. [Pg.87]

CPR, cardiopulmonary resuscitation D5W, 5% dextrose in water PEA, pulseless electrical activity PVT, pulseless ventricular tachycardia ROSC, return of spontaneous circulation VF, ventricular fibrillation. [Pg.89]

Ergotamine tartrate Nausea and vomiting occur in up to 10% of patients. Numbness and tingling of fingers and toes muscle pain in the extremities pulselessness weakness in the legs precordial pain transient tachycardia or bradycardia localized edema itching. [Pg.971]

Deflbrillation is one of the few interventions that has been shown to improve outcome from cardiac arrest. The cardiac arrhythmias commonly associated with sudden collapse are (1) asystole and (2) rapid and ineffective depolarization due to ventricular flbrillation (VF), pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT), or supraventricular tachycardia with 1 1 ventricular response (as can occur with pre-excitation syndromes). The best strategy is to treat collapsed patients who have a broad-complex tachycardia at once by external Direct Current (DC) defibrillation. [Pg.508]

For patients in ventricular fibrillation/pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VF/PVT), rapid defibrillation is the single most important intervention that affects survival. [Pg.171]

Pulseless electrical activity (PEA)—The absence of a detectable pulse and the presence of some type of electrical activity other than ventricular fibrillation (VF) or paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia (PVT). [Pg.2690]

B. Complications. Ventricular tachycardia in patients with a pulse may be associated with hypotension or may deteriorate into pulseless ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. [Pg.14]

Sudden death caused by cardiac arrest due to ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation remains a serious health problem worldwide. In the United States alone, cardiovascular disease accounts for over 900,000 deaths annually (1). Of these deaths, 350,000 are due to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (2), two-thirds of which occur without prior recognition of cardiac disease (1). In the United States, 15-20% of all fatalities and 50% of all cardiac fatalities are sudden. Although sudden death caused by asystole or pulseless electrical activity is not preventable, sudden death caused by a ventricular arrhythmia can be. Prompt treatment to stop the ventricular arrhythmia before it causes death is possible. [Pg.495]

A 47-year-old woman took 10 g of amantadine (150 mg/kg) and had a pulseless cardiac arrest with ventricular tachycardia she was resuscitated with difficulty. A 33-year-old woman took 10 g of amantadine hydrochloride her QTc interval was 526 msec and the semm potassium 3.0 mmol/1 she recovered after potassium repletion. [Pg.604]

Ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia algorithm... [Pg.126]

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT) require aggressive, systematic treatment Follow this algorithm for patients with these arrhythmias. [Pg.126]
