System effectiveness - meaning

Other Systemic Effects. Mean body weight gain was decreased in rats treated by gavage with isophorone at 1000 mg/kg/day, but not at 500 mg/kg/day in a 16-day experiment by NTP (1986). [Pg.41]

Subsea production systems are an alternative development option for an offshore field. They are often a very cost effective means of exploiting small fields which are situated close to existing infrastructure, such as production platforms and pipelines. They may also be used in combination with floating production systems. [Pg.267]

From the standpoint of a military product, system effectiveness is the probabiUty that the system meets successfully an operational demand within a given time when operating under specified conditions. From the standpoint of commercial products, system effectiveness is harder to define, but basically means customer satisfaction. There are several system parameters that are important to the customer. Some of these parameters are defined below. [Pg.5]

Adsorption. Adsorption (qv) is an effective means of lowering the concentration of dissolved organics in effluent. Activated carbon is the most widely used and effective adsorbent for dyes (4) and, it has been extensively studied in the waste treatment of the different classes of dyes, ie, acid, direct, basic, reactive, disperse, etc (5—22). Commercial activated carbon can be prepared from lignite and bituminous coal, wood, pulp mill residue, coconut shell, and blood and have a surface area ranging from 500—1400 m /g (23). The feasibiUty of adsorption on carbon for the removal of dissolved organic pollutants has been demonstrated by adsorption isotherms (24) (see Carbon, activated carbon). Several pilot-plant and commercial-scale systems using activated carbon adsorption columns have been developed (25—27). [Pg.381]

Process operators are expected to be exercising normal surveillance of the process. Therefore, alarms are not appropriate for situations known to the operator either through previous alarms or through normal process sui veillance. The sleeping operator problem can Be addressed by far more effective means than tne alarm system. [Pg.770]

Membrane Pervaporation Since 1987, membrane pei vapora-tion has become widely accepted in the CPI as an effective means of separation and recovery of liquid-phase process streams. It is most commonly used to dehydrate hquid hydrocarbons to yield a high-purity ethanol, isopropanol, and ethylene glycol product. The method basically consists of a selec tively-permeable membrane layer separating a liquid feed stream and a gas phase permeate stream as shown in Fig. 25-19. The permeation rate and selectivity is governed bv the physicochemical composition of the membrane. Pei vaporation differs From reverse osmosis systems in that the permeate rate is not a function of osmotic pressure, since the permeate is maintained at saturation pressure (Ref. 24). [Pg.2194]

Particle trajectories can be calculated by utilizing the modern CFD (computational fluid dynamics) methods. In these calculations, the flow field is determined with numerical means, and particle motion is modeled by combining a deterministic component with a stochastic component caused by the air turbulence. This technique is probably an effective means for solving particle collection in complicated cleaning systems. Computers and computational techniques are being developed at a fast pace, and one can expect that practical computer programs for solving particle collection in electrostatic precipitators will become available in the future. [Pg.1228]

The point of all this is simply that we must not use the apparent plate height or the apparent plate number as performance criteria in the unified chromatography techniques on the justification that they already work well for LC and that they work well for GC when a pressure correction is applied. A considerable expansion of theory and an effective means for evaluating equations (7.4) or (7.5) are required first. Likewise, as we consider multidimensional chromatography involving techniques existing between the extremes of LC and GC, we must not build judgments of the multidimensional system on unsound measures of the individual techniques involved. [Pg.167]

Optimum flowrates, resulting in high productivity and low eluent consumption, are estimated first for an ideal system , which means that kinetic and hydrodynamic dispersive effects are assumed to be negligible [46]. This procedure has recently been improved [57]. [Pg.264]

The spraying process provides a method of treating steel with coatings of zinc or aluminium, which can afterwards be painted. A combination of such a metallic primer and a good peunt system is the most effective means of combatting corrosion of constructional steelwork at a reasonable cost that is yet known. [Pg.429]

Most traditional models focus on looking for equilibrium solutions among some set of (pre-defined) aggregate variables. The LEs are effectively mean-field equations, in which certain variables (i.e. attrition rate) are assumed to represent an entire force, the equilibrium state is explicitly solved for and declared the battle outcome. In contrast, ABMs focus on understanding the kinds of emergent patterns that might arise while the overall system is out of (or far from) equilibrium. [Pg.601]

The results were simple and clear-cut Only the two terms ofa° and Emin were involved for the a-cyclodextrin systems, and the two terms of k and Emin, for (S-cyclodextrin systems. This means that the stabilities of the inclusion complexes are mainly governed by the electronic and steric interactions in a-cyclodextrin systems and by the hydro-phobic and steric interactions in (i-cyclodextrin systems, regardless of the position of the substituents in the phenols. These observations agree well with those by Harata23), who showed that there is no appreciable difference in thermodynamic parameters between cyclodextrin complexes of m- and p-di substituted benzenes and that the contribution of the enthalpy term to the complexation is more significant in a-cyclodextrin systems than in P-cyclodextrin systems, where the inhibitory effect... [Pg.77]

The idea of constructing a good wave function of a many-particle system by means of an exact treatment of the two-particle correlation is also underlying the methods recently developed by Brueck-ner and his collaborators for studying nuclei and free-electron systems. The effective two-particle reaction operator and the self-consistency conditions introduced in this connection may be considered as generalizations of the Hartree-Fock scheme. [Pg.258]

This is an indication of the collective nature of the effect. Although collisions between hard spheres are instantaneous the model itself is not binary. Very careful analysis of the free-path distribution has been undertaken in an excellent old work [74], It showed quite definite although small deviations from Poissonian statistics not only in solids, but also in a liquid hard-sphere system. The mean free-path X is used as a scaling length to make a dimensionless free-path distribution, Xp, as a function of a free-path length r/X. In the zero-density limit this is an ideal exponential function (Ap)o- In a one-dimensional system this is an exact result, i.e., Xp/(Xp)0 = 1 at any density. In two dimensions the dense-fluid scaled free-path distributions agree quite well with each other, but not so well with the zero-density scaled distribution, which is represented by a horizontal line (Fig. 1.21(a)). The maximum deviation is about... [Pg.52]
