Syringe injector

A sample must be introduced onto the column in an efficient and reproducible manner. One of the most popular injectors is the syringe injector. The sample, in a microliter syringe, is injected through a neoprene/Teflon septum. This type of injection can be used at pressures up to 3000 psi. 

The operation of septumless syringe injectors involves inserting a syringe needle into the injector and tightening an inert seal around the needle in order to obtain a pressurized fit. A valve is then adjusted and the injection is made at the operating pressure and flow-rate of the column. The syringe must be suitable for high-pressure injection. 

This type of sample introduction can be subdivided into two classes (i) septum-type syringe injectors and (ii) septumless syringe injectors. 

Good column performance is correlated directly with proper sample introduction onto the column in form of a narrow plug. Basically, the sample can be introduced into the high-pressure system in two ways By syringe injectors or by sample valves.

Desty presented the first GC of the present construction type with a syringe injector and thermal conductivity detector. The first commercial instruments were supplied by Burrell Corp., Perkin Elmer and Podbielniak Corp. 

Microlitre syringes, automatic syringe injectors, and liquid sampling valves have been used successfully for introducing representative samples into the gas chromatographic inlet.
