Synthetic biology promoters

The previous chapter demonstrated that some of the toxicological concern that is commonly directed to organic chemicals has been transferred to the relatively harmless peptide products. These compounds were specifically designed to be biologically friendly and have minimal adverse side effects. BST was developed in response to the litany of concerns over the use of synthetic growth-promoting drugs and antibiotics. However, BST was condemned even before it was released. [Pg.121]

Unlike bacterial promoters, the coupled enhancer-a promoter systems have been completely ignored by the community in the early days of synthetic biology except for one notable exception (Atkinson et al. 2003). In addition to this work, bacterial enhancers so far have been used in three additional synthetic biology works (Amit et al. 2011 Huo et al. 2006) with no real applications as of yet. In this section, 1 will explain in computational terms why this underutilization of enhancers is expected to change as we move into developing the next phase of synthetic biology applications. [Pg.9]

Before leaving for the Jamboree, inform your various news agencies that your team has been working hard and is ready to compete. Not only will this raise local interest and team spirits, judges will be impressed by efforts of teams to promote synthetic biology and iGEM. [Pg.270]
