Synthesis sonication

In organic synthesis, sonication has a long tradition. Ultrasound in electrochemistry has been introduced as a means to enhance convection in coulometric cells [286, 287]. Most important application became Anal Chem [288, 289]. Very popular was electrochemical stripping analysis [290], since in this case the action of ultrasound can be restricted to the electrochemical trace accumulation, where no interaction between power sound and sensitive signal measurement has to be suspected. [Pg.40]

The mitochondrial complex that carries out ATP synthesis is called ATP synthase or sometimes FjFo-ATPase (for the reverse reaction it catalyzes). ATP synthase was observed in early electron micrographs of submitochondrial particles (prepared by sonication of inner membrane preparations) as round, 8.5-nm-diameter projections or particles on the inner membrane (Figure 21.23). In micrographs of native mitochondria, the projections appear on the matrixfacing surface of the inner membrane. Mild agitation removes the particles from isolated membrane preparations, and the isolated spherical particles catalyze ATP hydrolysis, the reverse reaction of the ATP synthase. Stripped of these particles, the membranes can still carry out electron transfer but cannot synthesize ATP. In one of the first reconstitution experiments with membrane proteins, Efraim Racker showed that adding the particles back to stripped membranes restored electron transfer-dependent ATP synthesis. [Pg.694]

Many reactions have been shown to benefit from irradiation with ultrasound (ref. 19). We therefore decided to investigate the effect of ultrasound, different catalysts and the presence of solids on Ullmann diaryl ether synthesis. Indeed, sonication of mixtures of a phenol and a bromoaromatic compound, in the absence of solvent and presence of copper (I) iodide as catalyst and potassium carbonate as base, produces good yields of diaryl ethers at relatively low temperatures (Fig. 10) (ref 20). [Pg.56]

Indium-mediated allylation of an unreactive halide with an aldehyde132 was used to synthesize an advanced intermediate in the synthesis of antillatoxin,133 a marine cyanobacteria (Lyngbya majus-cula) that is one of the most ichthyotoxic compounds isolated from a marine plant to date. In the presence of a lanthanide triflate, the indium-mediated allylation of Z-2-bromocrotyl chloride and aldehyde in saturated NH4C1 under sonication yielded the desired advanced intermediate as a 1 1 mixture of diastereomers in 70% yield. Loh et al.134 then changed the halide compound to methyl (Z)-2-(bromomethyl)-2-butenoate and coupled it with aldehyde under the same conditions to yield the desired homoallylic alcohol in 80% yield with a high 93 7 syn anti selectivity (Eq. 8.55). [Pg.242]

The interest in the synthesis and properties of delafossite structured compounds that have the general formula of ABO2 have grown due to their p-type conductivity and optical transparency. The application of ultrasound for the synthesis of ternary oxide AgMC>2 (M = Fe, Ga) has been investigated by Nagarajan and Tomar [44]. Abstract This chapter discusses the effect of ultrasound propagation in water and aqueous solutions, in the atmosphere of inert and reactive gases. Sonochemical studies of aqueous solutions of divalent and trivalent metal ions and their salts have been reviewed and the precipitation behaviour of hydroxides of metal ions has been discussed. Synthesis of nanoparticles of many metals using ultrasound and in aqueous solutions has also been discussed briefly.
