In our laboratory the motivation for the synthesis of di- and triblock copolymers was three-fold 1) synthesis of the organic blocks by a living polymerization technique such that segment length and copolymer composition could be controlled, 2) prevention of coupling of macromolecular species and 3) use of a technique that would allow for the synthesis of a plethora of copolymers based on variation of the organic monomer. Considering these qualifications, ATRP of vinyl monomers from mono- and difunctional PDMS macroinitiators was used. Jenekhe and coworkers reported the synthesis of ABA triblock copolymers containing poly (9,9-dihexylfluorene-2,7-diyl)(PHF) and PBLG segments (17) by NCA polymerization from benzylamine end-functionalized PHF (Rubatat et al, 2008). The copolymers exhibited two different conformations (rod-rod-rod and coU-rod-coil) as a result of a controllable rod-to-coil transition of the polypeptide helices. X-ray scattering data showed that the coil-rod-coil form of the copolymer leads to lamellar ordering, whereas the rod-rod-rod form exhibits a clusterlike stmcture.
