Syngas from coal

The first gas company was established in 1812 in London to produce gas from coal and to light the Westminster Bridge. In 1816, the first gas plant for the manufacture of syngas from coal was built in the United States to light the streets of the city of Baltimore. By 1826, gas plants were also built to manufacture gas for lighting the streets of Boston and New York City. Soon thereafter, gas plants and distribution networks were built to light the streets of most major cities throughout the world.

Methanol can also be produced from syngas with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in a 2 1 ratio. Coal-derived methanol typically has low sulfur and other impurities. Syngas from coal can be reformed by reacting with water to produce hydrogen. Ammonium sulfate from coal tar by pyrolysis can be converted to ammonia. The humus substances can be recovered from brown coal by alkali extraction.

Early FT-literamre reveals (particularly for iron) an initial catalyst transformation time [1]. FT-iron catalysts generally exhibit WGS-activity, which is advantageous in case of CO-rich syngas (from coal) and should be essential for FT-synthesis with a H2/CO2 syngas. 

The present chapter will review the present state of the art and challenges in the ultradeep desulfurization of natural gas, gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, reformate, and syngas from coal gasifier by HDS, selective adsorption, solvent absorption, and ODS, respectively. 

In addition to the processes described above, there are a number of other physical absorption processes which will not be discussed here in detail either because they can be reasonably used for the purification of methanol syngas from coal with economically justifiable expenditure only in exceptional cases, or because they have not yet been tested on an industrial scale. These processes include... 

New perspectives with respect to capital investment and operating costs of amine units, but also to their H2S/CD2 selectivity, are opened up by the so-called hindered canines about which more detailed publications first appeared in 1983 [2.19]. Their H2S/CO2 selectivity can be used to good advantage especially for the purification of syngas from coal. 

The U. S. Office of Coal Research has sponsored most of the experimental work on making syncrude and syngas from coal but EXXON and other energy companies are developing proprietary processes.

The integration of CLC with fossil fuel power plant has also been investigated by Spal-lina [91] using dynamically operated PBRs operated with syngas from coal gasification.

The research on CLC integration in fossil fuel power plants has been addressed to the use of combined cycle both from natural gas and syngas from coal gasification. Power plants with direct solid conversion have been recently proposed. Summarizing, the following potentialities can be highlighted for CLC technologies ...
