MRI of the female pelvis is performed after 5 h of fasting and with prior intramuscular injection of peristaltic inhibitors to minimize artifacts due to bowel movement. The patient lies on her back in a supine position with a pelvic, torso, or cardiac coil attached around her pelvis. The coil ideally covers the region from the symphysis pubis up to the renal hilum. Depending on the woman s height, upper coverage may be lower and require secondary adjustment of the... [Pg.197]

For spinal images the centre should he within the centre of the area under investigation such for the whole spine, midway between the chin and the symphysis pubis, and for the cervical spine midway between the external auditory canal and the head of the humerus. [Pg.25]

The symphysis pubis and inferior pubic ramus are the origin of the long and short adductors and gracilis muscles. Avulsions here are typically the result of over use and discrete fractures are rarely seen. Iliac crest avulsion from abdominal musculature is rare and is associated with abrupt directional changes or repetitive microtrauma. [Pg.188]

In the pendulous penis, emissary veins from the corpus cavernosum and spongiosum drain dorsally to the deep dorsal, laterally to the circumflex, and ventrally to the periurethral veins. Beginning at the coronal sulcus, the prominent deep dorsal vein is the main venous drainage of the glans penis, corpus spongiosum, and distal two thirds of the corpora cavernosa. Usually, a single vein, but sometimes more than one deep dorsal vein, runs upward behind the symphysis pubis to join the periprostatic venous plexus. [Pg.15]

This lesion can occur when the erect penis is forcibly displaced towards the feet (Pryor and Hill 1979). Diagnosis of rupture of the suspensory ligament is made by history and by palpation of a gap between the base of the shaft of the penis and the symphysis pubis. An abnormal angle is noted during erection. Ultrasonography is able to document the gap between the pubis and the penile shaft and associated hematomas of the soft tissues (Fig. 12.5), but usually does not provide additional useful information (Bertolotto and Pozzi Mucelli 2004). [Pg.99]

The pelvis is not a rigid structure. It has an anterior articulation at the symphysis pubis and two articulations with the sacrum. [Pg.295]

As the pelvis rotates and tilts, a torsional efiect develops at the symphysis pubis. This is created because every part of the pelvis is moving at a different linear velocity. Measuring the displacement of rotation and tilt of the lateral edge of the r t innominate from the fixed left hip will show that the angular velocity is constant from eveiy part of the left and right Innominates, but the linear velocity, and therefore the distance traveled, increases from left to right. Thus, the... [Pg.295]

A similar technique may be used anteriorly, applying the pressure over the symphysis pubis (Fig. 116-4). [Pg.648]

Its physiological effect consists in relaxing and softening the symphysis pubis. Many mammals (e.g. guinea pigs) cannot have a normal birth without relaxin. Relaxin has been detected even in man and should be important in the initial phases of birth. [Pg.350]
