A cooking appliance must be controlled by a switch separate from the cooker but in a readily accessible position. Where two cooking appliances are installed in one room, such as split-level cookers, one switch may be used to control both appliances provided that neither appliance is more than 2 m from the switch (On Site Guide, Appendix 8). [Pg.232]

This approach has been applied to the separation of polymers, oligomers, and monomers. Each fraction is then farther separated using a suitable separation method. One example is the separation of saccharides in exploded wood. Proteins, peptides, and amino acids were analyzed, step by step, and an automated column-switching separation was studied. However, the separation of proteins does not compete with that achieved by two-dimensional electrophoresis. [Pg.482]

Another immediate application of r-RESPA is to the case when the force can be subdivided into a short range part and a long range part. One way for effectuating this break up is to introduce a switching function, s x) that is unity at short inter-particle separations and 0 at large inter-particle separations. We introduced this strategy in our earlier non-reversible RESPA paper [15] where we expressed the total force as. [Pg.306]

When using a switching function in a molecular simulation with a residue-based cutoff it is important that the function has the same value for all pairs of atoms in the two interacting groups. Otherwise, severe fluctuations in the energy can arise when the separation is within the cutoff region. These two contrasting situations can be formally expressed as follows ... [Pg.347]

The chemist can try to separate the two isomers by careful fractional distillation but it will be next to impossible to do because both the cis and the trans have practically the same boiling point. There are a few things that the chemist can do or hope for to get rid of that cis isomer. The cis configuration is less stable than the trans and may switch over to the trans configuration with a little help. The chemist can gently heat the isosafrole oil to about 150°C for an hour or so. She can also try the same heating except have the oil mixed with some acetic acid. Also, the isosafrole can be fractionally distilled to ultra purity and then be allowed to simply sit for a couple of days. Trans isosafrole may spontaneously crystalize out while the cis form remains as an oil. They can then be separated by filtration. [Pg.44]

A useful guide when using the polarity index is that a change in its value of 2 units corresponds to an approximate tenfold change in a solute s capacity factor. Thus, if k is 22 for the reverse-phase separation of a solute when using a mobile phase of water (P = 10.2), then switching to a 60 40 water-methanol mobile phase (P = 8.2) will decrease k to approximately 2.2. Note that the capacity factor decreases because we are switching from a more polar to a less polar mobile phase in a reverse-phase separation. [Pg.581]

Hyper Raman scattering is at a wavenumber 2vq v r, where Vq is the wavenumber of the exciting radiation and —v r and +V[jr are the Stokes and anti-Stokes hyper Raman displacements, respectively. The hyper Raman scattering is well separated from the Raman scattering, which is centred on Vq, but is extremely weak, even with a 0-switched laser. [Pg.364]

Nitromethane [75-52-5] is produced in China. Presumably a modified Victor Meyer method is being employed. Nitromethane is transported in dmms or smaller containers. Two tank cars of nitromethane exploded in separate incidents in the 1950s. Both explosions occurred in the switching yard of a railroad station. In both cases, essentially adiabatic vapor compression of the nitromethane—air mixture in the gas space of the tank car resulted in the detonation of the Hquid nitromethane. Other nitroparaffins do not, however, detonate in this manner. [Pg.36]
