Sustainability metrics system

Evaluation. The design options are checked with respect to their performance. Taking the wide range of criteria in the safety, health, onomics, enviromnent and t echnology (SHEET) aspects speciflc choices are made for economic performance, sustainability and technology. With respect to economics, we calculate the capital and operational costs of a process for its time horizon. We use exergy efficiency as a sustainability metric, while a systems response time is used to define the responsiveness of the process.

The ACC s Responsible Care Management Systems as well as EMAS systems include requirements for the public reporting of performance information. RCMS reportable metrics already include some economic measures for some organizations. Public reporting of performance information can increases transparency and facilitates stakeholder involvement. Organizations that use RCMS or an EMAS system can seek expansion to address sustainability by publicly reporting social and additional economic metrics and information. 

Various metrics within each of the three dimensions of sustainability have long been well developed and used. Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, literacy and poverty rates, and ambient concentration of urban air pollutants are some examples of economic, social, and environmental metrics employed at the national level. In businesses, financial metrics such as return on investment as well as certain metrics that reflect employee well-being and environmental performance, such as health and safety incident rates and regulated toxic releases, are also conventionally used. Sustainable development, however, requires further cross-functional integration of these metrics as well as the inclusion of additional metrics that facilitate more systemic and comprehensive multidisciplinary communication and thinking. 

Two classes of metrics are under development to indicate the state and performance of a system. These metrics are more popularly known as indexes. Those indicating a system state are known as content indexes and those measuring the system behavior, performance indexes. The following discussion is focused on the performance ones only, as we are mostly focused on the means of improving the sustainability eharacteristics of a membrane system.
