Surges definition

Some consideration of surge characteristics should be made, and unless your own plant design includes antisurge controls, it should definitely be mentioned in the specification. Possibly, the vendor can quote antisurge equipment with his offering. At a later date, the specification will serve as a good reminder to both the vendor and purchaser if some mention of compressor control is made. The details may be worked out at any convenient point, such as at the bid review or possibly later in a coordination meeting. 

The throw of downward-projected heated jets or upward-projected chilled jets can be derived from Eqs. (7.85) and (7.88) for K equal to some value, e.g., 0.1. Helander and Jakowatz, in their work on heated jets projected downward, have called attention to some of the differences between the actual conditions and those assumed for analysis. One of these is the radial escape of warm air in the terminal zone of a hot stteam projected downward. This escaping warm air then rises and causes a change in ambient conditions for the upper part of the jet. The terminal zone and the edges of the jet are zones of marked instability, with definite surges and fluctuations, so that the jet envelope is very difficult to define or to determine experimentally. In the closure to the paper presented by Knaak, Dr. Helander suggested that from the point of view of practical application, the distance to the beginning of the unstable, tet-minal zone of the jet is about 80% of the jet throw. 

What the PED does say in its ESR related to SRVs is that pressure-limit- PED categories ing devices must prevent the maximum allowable pressure being permanently exceeded. The safety valve (SV) should be set at PS (= MAP) or lower, with exception of momentary pressure surge (accumulation) which is 10% of PS in all cases (multiple valves also) and except for fire, this can be higher if proven safe. This is much more general but definitely differs with ASME as described in detail in Section 3.6. 

Doctors have noted this tendency for many years, but the definitive study was done in 2003. Investigators from the United States and Japan collaborated in the work that determined that significant morning surges in blood pressure present a major risk of stroke for older patients with hypertension. Previous work established a similar risk for older people arising from an afternoon siesta. It s scary to think that taking a nap can actually be hazardous to one s health ...

Fortunately, there has been a surge of interest within the last decade in the physical macrostructure of coal with special emphasis on the relation of the petrographic properties of coal to its technological behavior. Indeed, equating technological behavior of coal (or, for that matter, any feedstock) with a definite entity should warrant far more attention than the attempts to equate technological behavior with a hypothetical (and, albeit, unknown) molecular structure.
