Surfactant-assisted synthesis

It is worth reviewing how kinetic and thermodynamic factors generally affect the growth of nanostructures under the influence of surfactants. Though they used CdSe and PbS respectively to study the surfactant-assisted synthesis of nanorods, Peng et al. and Lee et al. have produced a pair of quite complimentary studies. Peng etal. observed that kinetic control via monomer concentration was the principle factor in their growth...

The hydrothermal route has been used for synthesizing nanotubes and related structures of a variety of other inorganic materials as well. Thus, nanotubes of several metal oxides (eg., SiO, V2O5, ZnO ) have been produced hydrothermally. Nanotubes of oxides such as VJO, are also conveniently prepared from a suitable metal oxide precursor in the presence of an organic amine or a surfactant. Surfactant-assisted synthesis of CdSe and CdS nanotubes has been reported. Here the metal oxide reacts with the sulfidizing/selenidizing agent in the presence of a surfactant such as TritonX. ... 

Structured micro-assemblies built from nanoparticle primary subunits can be classified into several categories arranged, hierarchical, and oriented nanoparticle assemblies. In addition to this, one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems exist under each of these divisions. Methods of preparation can differ vastly depending on the material being synthesized or processed, i here is hardly a universal method that can be applied for the majority of chemistries, but there are several general approaches involving wet chemical techniques that are commonly used. Examples of commonly used techniques include solvothermal, sol-gel processing, surfactant-assisted synthesis, or solvent-controlled synthesis [73].
