Erosion and Corrosion combined require special consideration. Most of the stainless steels and related corrosion-resistant alloys ow e their surface stability and low rate of corrosion to passive films that develop on the surface either prior to or during exposure to reactive fluids. If conditions change from passive to active, or if the passive film is removed and not promptly reinstated, much higher rates of corrosion may be expected. [Pg.270]

Paine et al. [99] tried different stabilizers [i.e., hydroxy propylcellulose, poly(N-vinylpyrollidone), and poly(acrylic acid)] in the dispersion polymerization of styrene initiated with AIBN in the ethanol medium. The direct observation of the stained thin sections of the particles by transmission electron microscopy showed the existence of stabilizer layer in 10-20 nm thickness on the surface of the polystyrene particles. When the polystyrene latexes were dissolved in dioxane and precipitated with methanol, new latex particles with a similar surface stabilizer morphology were obtained. These results supported the grafting mechanism of stabilization during dispersion polymerization of styrene in polar solvents. [Pg.205]

Better surface stability could be achieved if the surface components are less mobile. Some success has been achieved with polyethylene and perhalogenated polymer surfaces (8,11,12,29). Crosslinking the surface should also decrease its mobility, and this is how (TD)2DPM provides added stability, Figure 3. Some surface rearrangement does appear to occur initially, but samples have retained good hydrophilicity (contact angle 45-55°) for a year. [Pg.225]

The intriguing point is that the actual alkylation step may be the same at the anode and cathode, presumably by alkyl radicals which, in analogy to the Paneth reaction, alkylate the metal. The lifetime of the radical ion, reactivity of the radical ion or the radical towards the metal, stabilization of the radical by adsorption on the electrode surface, stabilization of each of the intermediates by solvation, their build-up in the double layer, the potential applied, all have an important contribution to the outcome. In certain cases the ET takes place catalytically, by a mediator or under the influence of surface effects17. It is therefore important to keep in mind the possible subtle differences between cases described below that otherwise appear similar. [Pg.669]

With an emphasis on scale electrical conductivity (surface stability as well), a number of new alloys have been recently developed specifically for SOFC interconnect applications. The one that has received wide attention is Crofer 22 APU, an FSS developed by Quadakkers et al. [136, 137] at Julich and commercialized by Thyssen Krupp of Germany. Crofer 22 APU, which contains about 0.5% Mn, forms a unique scale, as shown in Figure 4.6, comprised of a (Mn,Cr)304 spinel top layer and a chromia sublayer [137-139], The electrical conductivity of (Mn,Cr)304 has been reported... [Pg.189]

The aforementioned requirements on surface stability are typical for all exposed areas of the metallic interconnect, as well as other metallic components in an SOFC stack e.g., some designs use metallic frames to support the ceramic cell. In addition, the protection layer for the interconnect or in particular the active areas that... [Pg.199]

In the energy domain, new and efficient uses in gas lines, electric cable ducts and the like, will promote surface stabilization and endurance as well as complex stress capability of various extruded or cast systems. Such reactants as acetylene terminated polymers have yielded cross-linked cured, networks of exceptional density and durability. A diimide dianhydride combined with (3) ethynylaniline yields an acetylene terminated tetraimide. On further polymerization at 250°C, the cross-linked structure derived can be used continuously at about 230°C. When this is combined with polymer carbon fibers or filaments, an exceedingly refractory and tough binder is produced. [Pg.198]
