Surface grinder

Setting up and operating machine tools (lathe, toolmaker s milling machine, surface grinder, cylindrical grinder electrical discharge machine-EDM) to make a variety of precision metal components. 

A typical surface grinder is shown in Fig. 10.1 and uses a 300 mm diameter by 25 mm wide grinding wheel. The reciprocating table and cross-slide movements are hydraulically operated, although alternative hand operation is provided.

ELID grinding of ceramics on vertical rotary surface grinder (Ohmori et al., 1996)... 

The experiments were conducted on a vertical rotary surface grinder with a 5.5 kW motor spindle. The feed can be continuously adjusted within a range. The workpieces were made from intered sintered reaction-bonded silicon nitride (SRBSN) and cast-and-sintered silicon nitride (Si3N4). The grain size was between 0.3 and 0.4 pm for SRBSN and between 0.6 and 0.8 pm for SiaN4. Cast-iron fiber-bonded diamond wheels of 200 mm diameter were used. A Noritake AFG-M grinding fluid at a rate of 20-30 L/min was used as electrolytic fluid. 

Although the basic principles are the same, current surface grinder models have differing control systems. A typical model is shown in Fig. 10.5. These control systems were developed to offer the operator the advantages of computer control without the complexity of full CNC systems. Full CNC grinding machines are of course available.

Plunge grinding tests are performed on En 31 Steel on a horizontal spindle surface grinder. Standard dressing conditions for finish grinding practice [6] are adopted for the tests. Three proprietory fluids A, B, and C, as given below, are used in the experimentation, with 2.5% concentration and a flow rate of 2 litres per minute.
