Finish grinding

The manufacture of Portland concrete consists of three basic steps—crushing, burning, and finish grinding. As noted earlier, Portland cement contains about 60% lime, 25% silicates, and 5% alumina with the remainder being iron oxides and gypsum. Most cement plants are located near limestone (CaCOs) quarries since this is the major source of lime. Lime may also come from oyster shells, chalk, and a type of clay called marl. The silicates and alumina are derived from clay, silicon sand, shale, and blast-furnace slag. 

If a hard substance can be obtained only in large pieces, it should first be broken with a hammer, then crushed into small particles in an iron or steel mortar, after which it should be ground in the porcelain mortar. In the final grinding it is often advisable to sift the fairly fine from the coarser particles, then to finish grinding the former by itself and to crush and grind the coarser particles apart. 

Finish-Grinding of Cement Clinker Typically the hot clinker is first cooled and then ground in a compartment mill in closed circuit with an air classifier. To crush the clinkers, balls as large as 5 in may be needed in the first compartment. A roll press added before the ball mill can reduce clinkers to a fine size, and thus reduce the load on the ball mills. The main reasons for adding a roll press has been to increase capacity of the plant, and lower cost.

For the grinding of RBSN ceramic, the test conditions employed for finish grinding are shown in Table 4.6. The machine parameter of width of grind was held constant at bi, = 1.59 mm. For test condition number 2 through... 

The grinding conditions used for finish grinding in this research are shown in Table 4.8 and Table 4.9. Table 4.8 is for the grinding conditions for RBSN ceramic and Table 4.9 is for the almnina ceramic. The grind directions were perpendicular to the direction of the tensile stress in the subsequent flexural strength test, which is groimd transverse to the length of the bar.

Therefore, BB wheels are recommended for rough grinding. The CIFB wheels that have a thick insulating layer should be used for mirror finish grinding. However, our investigations have shown that CIFB can be used for rough as well as mirror finish grinding.

Both rough and finish grinding can be achieved on the same machine tool using ELID II and ELID III procedures.

In most modern extruders and injection machines, the barrel is lined, by centrifugal casting from the melt, with any of several white irons containing chromium and boron carbides and having hardnesses near Rockwell C65. Aster finish-grinding and polishing, the liner, about 1 mm thick, provides excellent resistance to wear or corrosion or both, depending on the formation. The best known trade name is XALOY .
