Suppressing output

Although no clear picture has yet emerged, there is a current tendency to think of enkephalins as neurotransmitters, and of )8-endorphin as a hormone that suppresses output of other neurotransmitters. It is puzzling that the human body liberates an analgesic under some painful conditions but not others. 

Filters that output noncoherent detector statistics have, in our recent work [1], shown to be very powerful for grain noise suppression in ultrasonics. However, such filters require the operator to carefully specify a transient prototype as a model of the defect echoes which should be detected. Here a new approach is presented, based on the above ideas about perception, which eliminates the need for the operator to manually specify a defect prototype. 

For clutter suppression, the test statistic used by the noncoherent detector has been proposed as an interesting output signal [1], This was motivated by the fact that, provided that transient and noise models are valid, the test statistic reflects the likelihood that a transient is present. 

The result is that, for the case of a cavity operated with, say, seven modes, the output is like that in Figure 9.5 when the cavity is mode locked. Only the modes which have a node at one end of the cavity are output from the laser and all others are suppressed.

Steam injection. Steam can be injected into the combustion zone as an inert material with the purpose of reducing the peak flame temperature and thereby reducing the NO formation. NO emissions can be reduced by typically 60% by steam injection. An obvious drawback is that the injected steam is lost to atmosphere. A side effect of the steam injection is that it increases the power output due to the higher mass flowrate through the turbine. Indeed, steam injection over and above that required for NO suppression can be used to increase power production during times of peak power demand. 

In such cases, we could try to reduce the high-frequency output noise by suppressing it at the input. So that could be a valid reason to place a small ceramic capacitor at the input of an older-generation switcher IC (i.e., one with a BJT switch). Its primary purpose is then not to ensure that the control does not go into chaos because of switch transient noise, but to reduce the output noise in noise-sensitive applications. 

Sometimes the calculation predicts that the fluid as initially constrained is supersaturated with respect to one or more minerals, and hence, is in a metastable equilibrium. If the supersaturated minerals are not suppressed, the model proceeds to calculate the equilibrium state, which it needs to find if it is to follow a reaction path. By allowing supersaturated minerals to precipitate, accounting for any minerals that dissolve as others precipitate, the model determines the stable mineral assemblage and corresponding fluid composition. The model output contains the calculated results for the supersaturated system as well as those for the system at equilibrium.
