A modified zeolite was used to support Pt particles derived from the cluster anions [PtsIGOIgl ( = 4-6). Mesoporous channels (2.7 and 4.7 nm pore size) of FSM-16 were modified with Ti02 or zirconia by the impregnation and hydrolysis of Ti or Zr alkoxides with subsequent calcination. The Pt carbonyl cluster anions were synthesized within the modified FSM-16 by the reaction of H2PtCl6 with CO and water, and then characterized by IR and UV-VIS spectroscopies. Pyrolysis under vacuum at 573 K gave supported nanoparticles, which were more active for CO hydrogenation and more selective for C2-C3 alkanes than the unmodified Pt/FSM-16 catalyst. [Pg.767]
