The solutions of most problems were programmed with MatLab from the Math Works company, either on Macintosh desk computers or on Sun workstations in the classroom. 

Two Bruker DRX-spectrometers, each connected to a INDY-workstation (INDY WS) use FTP to communicate and exchange data files via a thin-wire Ethernet with a SUN workstation, acting as a bridge to the central network (thick-wire Ethernet). FTP is used to send data from both DRX spectrometers via the bridge to the central server workstation (SERVER WS). 

As part of their efforts to employ parallel computers for molecular dynamics simulations, Schulten and co-workers generated a series of MD benchmarks based on their own program on a wide range of machines, including an Apple Macintosh II, a Silicon Graphics 320 VGX, a 32K-processor Conneaion Machine CM-200, a 60-node INMOS Transputer system, and a network of Sun workstations (using Linda).2 8 j e benchmarks demonstrated that the program runs very efficiently on many platforms (e.g., at sevenfold Cray 2 processor speed on the CM-200 and at Cray 2 processor speed on the Transputer system). 

Nestor s NDS is a high-end development system for PC/AT s and for Apollo and Sun workstations. Unlike the other neural net shells, NDS is based on a propietary model on which Nestor holds a patent. Nestor claims that networks based on its model can be trained significantly faster than models based on backpropagation.

The test environment that has been set up consists of a Bosch Scara arm, where the camera and light source are placed at the end effector. The Bosch controller is connected to a SUN workstation, on which the robot program is generated. This SUN workstation is also used by the HLI, and the calibration software. The sensor processing hard- and soft-ware is located in a VME crate, allowing easy exchange of components without rebooting the entire system.
