In summary, recent progress and future prospects in the research field of fiuorescence and Raman spectroscopy combined with STM in order to achieve high spatial resolution spectroscopy have been reviewed. In the near future, single (sub-) molecule STM spectroscopy is expected to be applied to the nano-world of science and engineering. 

In summary, the prospects of mechanistic-based modelling appear to be several years away. However, it is clear that global reaction models are already losing favor because of their inability to answer current and future questions. We may look back and see the Clean Air Act as the beginning of the need for molecule-based models, where the input and output has to be commensurate with the nature of the questions being asked. 

In Section IV, the seminal experiments of Soep and co-workers [22, 44-55] are discussed, particularly insofar as there are useful similarities between the scenarios shown schematically in Figures 1 and 2. Short summaries are given at the end of each major section, rather than the complete article. Finally, future prospects are discussed and a few predictions offered, even if it means going out on a limb. ...
