The distillate consists of two layers, the upper one being acrolein, the lower an aqueous solution of sulphur dioxide. The latter is removed by shaking with powdered litharge till no more white lead sulphite is formed. The whole mass is again distilled on a water bath, the receiver being cooled, as before, and the same precautions taken to prevent the escape of uncondensed vapours. 

For determination of sulphur dioxide in small amounts, the only reliable method is distillation with the necessary precautions against oxidation in the flask. The distilled sulphur dioxide is oxidised in the receiver and estimated either by precipitation of the resulting sulphate with barium chloride, or by titration of the sulphuric acid formed. 

Because of the high-rate capability of the lithium-sulphur dioxide system, precautions must be talen to prevent a short-circuit of the cels. Mallory supply tHs system only in complete assembles using an internal fuse or other form of protection...
