Sources. By-product of many industrial processes around oil wells and in areas where petroleum products are processed, stored, or used decay of organic matter occurs naturally in coal, natural gas, oil, volcanic gases, and sulfur springs. [Pg.394]

Early humans doubtless found elemental sulfur in volcanic craters, encrusting the edges of hot sulfur springs, and embedded in limestone formations. They discovered that it would bum and used it for medicinal purposes, as a bleach, as a fumigant, as a colorant, and as incense. Its use for these purposes is mentioned in ancient writings. The Romans produced incendiary weapons from sulfur. In the thirteenth century, the Chinese invented gunpowder using sulfur, nitrate, and charcoal. [Pg.1161]

An application of the above results can be found in the study of the hot sulfurous springs of the French Pyrenees which issue from massive granite ( 5, ]. As seen in Table I, H2S, S0 together with Na and dissolved carbonate are major components. Polysulfide species were not detected (S(n-1][Sn ] < 10 g.atS/Kg]. These sulfurous springs should be equivalent to a H2S-H2O system. [Pg.32]

Heterotrophic microorganisms 7,9 (some involved in 4, 6, 8). waters exposed to light sulfur springs. Ubiquitous. sulfur metabolism linked to energy fixation. Reaction 7 may take place anaerobically overall conversion to SO4 aerobic. [Pg.295]

I m busy all the time, so a day with my wife is a vacation for me. That s why St. Lucia is very important, because we can be together and eat and take walks and have long conversations. For fun, we hike up Gros Piton. It s beautiful over there near Souftiere. We love to go to the Sulfur Springs and take baths, and my wife loves the cassava. We stop at this place on the side of the road near Soufriere where they make cassava bread, just a little place — they grind it, bake it and sell it. It s like something out of the Old World. [Pg.130]
