Sulfur containing gases

The Claus process, which involves the reaction of sulfur dioxide with hydrogen sulfide to produce sulfur in a furnace, is important in the production of sulfur from sour natural gas or by-product sulfur-containing gases (see Sulfurremoval and recovery). 

Desorption The removal of adsorbed materials from a solid sorbent by the use of a solvent or the application of heat. Desulfurization The removal of sulfur from flue or other sulfur-containing gases. 

Foul-smelling gases Sulfur-containing gases such as hydrogen sulfide that have an odor even at low concentrations.

Concat A process for removing residual sulfur-containing gases from the off-gases from the Claus process, by oxidation to sulfur trioxide and hot condensation to sulfuric acid. Developed by Lurgi and first operated at Port Sulfur, LA, in 1974.

If heavy fuel oil is fired, alloy studs with washers are provided and protected with ceramic fiber putty to prevent corrosion by metal slags. When high sulfur fuels are fired, the shell interior walls should be protected with a high temperature coating of sodium silicate or coal tar epoxy. Another method is to apply a thin layer of insulation to the exterior of the vessel to maintain the vessel s wall temperature safely above the dewpoint. A third approach is to impale a thin sheet of aluminum or alloy sheet steel on the studs at the midpoint of the ceramic insulation to reduce th flow of sulfur containing gases to the vessel s I.D. 

The oxidation mechanism of methanethiol on activated carbon fibers (ACF) in the presence of H2S and iron catalyst was proposed by Katoh and coworkers [78]. According to them the process is initiated by, which, through chain reactions with an iron catalyst involved, form OH radicals. Those radicals not only extract hydrogen from polysufide, form chain sulfur radicals, which accelerate the H2S oxidation but also oxidize DMDS formed by partial oxidation.
