Sulfonamide allergy adverse reactions

Adverse effects associated with ocular drugs are not imcommon, bnt serious reactions are extremely rare. These adverse reactions are nsnally manifestations of drug hypersensitivity (allergy) or toxicity. The allergic or toxic reaction usually occurs locally in the ocular tissues. Occasionally, as in erythema multiforme potentiated by sulfonamide agents, adverse reactions can manifest as a systemic response. 

Some adverse reactions are unrelated to either allergy or overdose these are termed idiosyncratic. For instance, sulfonamides may precipitate acute hemolysis in some people having a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase dehciency.

There have been single case reports of sulfonamide-like allergic reactions in patients taking celecoxib in two cases sulfonamide allergy was ignored and was discovered only after an adverse reaction to celecoxib (140) or rofecoxib (141) had occurred.
