Sulfides mineral processing

Electrochemical processes at some sulfide mineral surfaces lead to the formation of oxidation products as in the case of the hydrophobization of... [Pg.48]

Leaded Zinc Oxide. Oxides containing more than 5 wt % basic lead sulfate are classified as leaded and are made ia the American process from high lead materials, usually lead sulfide mineral, or by blending ziac oxide and basic lead sulfate. There is only one manufacturer ia the United States and the product contains 20—28 wt % basic lead sulfate. Leaded oxides are used only ia mbber ia the United States. [Pg.422]

Cadmium occurs primarily as sulfide minerals ia ziac, lead—ziac, and copper—lead—ziac ores. Beneftciation of these minerals, usually by flotation (qv) or heavy-media separation, yields concentrates which are then processed for the recovery of the contained metal values. Cadmium follows the ziac with which it is so closely associated (see Zinc and zinc alloys see also Copper Lead). [Pg.385]

Preparation of the Media Various sohd materials have been used to prepare the media. In the initial development of the process, a suspension of sand and also mixtures of barite and clay were used for separating coal from slate. Galena (lead sulfide mineral) was also used... [Pg.1788]

The modem process uses a potassium-sulfate-promoted vanadium(V) oxide catalyst on a silica or kie, selguhr support. The SO2 is obtained either by burning pure sulfur or by roasting sulfide minerals (p. 651) notably iron pyrite, or ores of Cu, Ni and Zn during the production of these metals. On a worldwide basis about 65% of the SO2 comes from the burning of sulfur and some 35% by the roasting of sulfide ores but in some countries (e.g, the UK) over 95% conies from the former. [Pg.708]

Copper, Cu, is unreactive enough for some to be found as the metal, but most is produced from its sulfides, particularly the ore cbalcopyrite, CuFeS2 (Fig. 16.10). The crushed and ground ore is separated from excess rock by froth flotation, a process that depends on the ability of sulfide ores to be wetted by oils but not by water. In this process, the powdered ore is combined with oil, water, and detergents (Fig. 16.1 l). Then air is blown through the mixture the oil-coated sulfide mineral floats to the surface with the froth, and the unwanted copper-poor residue, which is called gangue, sinks to the bottom. [Pg.785]

This mechanism as a main cause for epithermal-type Au deposition is supported by sulfur isotopic data on sulfides. Shikazono and Shimazaki (1985) determined sulfur isotopic compositions of sulfide minerals from the Zn-Pb and Au-Ag veins of the Yatani deposits which occur in the Green tuff region. The values for Zn-Pb veins and Au-Ag veins are ca. +0.5%o to -f4.5%o and ca. -l-3%o to - -6%c, respectively (Fig. 1.126). This difference in of Zn-Pb veins and Au-Ag veins is difficult to explain by the equilibrium isotopic fractionation between aqueous reduced sulfur species and oxidized sulfur species at the site of ore deposition. The non-equilibrium rapid mixing of H2S-rich fluid (deep fluid) with SO -rich acid fluid (shallow fluid) is the most likely process for the cause of this difference (Fig. 1.127). This fluids mixing can also explain the higher oxidation state of Au-Ag ore fluid and lower oxidation state of Zn-Pb ore fluid. Deposition of gold occurs by this mechanism but not by oxidation of H2S-rich fluid. [Pg.175]

Copper conversion is accomplished by a pyrometallurgical process known as smelting. During smelting the concentrates are dried and fed into one of several different types of furnaces. There the sulfide minerals are partially oxidized and melted to yield a layer of matte, a mixed copper-iron sulfide, and slag, an upper layer of waste. [Pg.82]

Peters (5) Has reviewed the leaching of copper, nickel, zinc, lead and molybdenum concentrates in terms of the thermodynamic stability of the sulfide minerals of these metals. Process developments associated with the most favorable decomposition paths are considered. [Pg.626]

The Fe and Mn that diffuse downward are subject to precipitation as carbonate and sulfide minerals in which the metals are present in reduced form. These minerals do not undergo any further chemical changes unless tectonic processes (uplift) cause them to come into contact with O2. As with the oxide phase, other metals tend to coprecipitate into the sulfide minerals, such as cadmium, silver, molybdenum, zinc, vanadium, copper, nickel, and uranium. [Pg.321]

In most industrial processes, copper is produced from the ore chalcopyrite, a mixed copper-iron sulfide mineral, or from the carbonate ores azurite and malachite. The extraction process depends on the chemical compositions of the ore. The ore is crushed and copper is separated by flotation. It then is roasted at high temperatures to remove volatile impurities. In air, chalcopyrite is oxidized to iron(ll) oxide and copper(ll) oxide ... [Pg.254]
