With regard to the potential release of metals from solid waste materials, changes in pH and redox conditions are of prime importance. Raw material input to petroleum refineries is primarily crude oil however, petroleum refineries use and generate an enormous number of chemicals, many of which leave the facilities as discharges of air emissions, wastewater, or solid waste. Pollutants generated typically include VOCs, carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur oxides (SOJ, nitrogen oxides (NOJ, particulates, ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (HjS) metals, spent acids, and numerous toxic organic compounds. [Pg.101]

In connection with the problems arising from the disposal of solid wastes, particularly of dredged materials, extraction sequences have been applied which are designed to differentiate between the exchangeable, carbonatic, reducible (hydrous Fe/Mn oxides), oxidizable (sulfides and organic phases) and residual fractions (Engler et al., 1977). One of the more widely applied extraction sequences of Tessier and coworkers (1979) has been modified by various authors a version of Ker-sten Forstner (1986) differentiates easily and moderately reducible components (Table 3-4). [Pg.45]

Applicability Most hazardous waste slurried in water can be mixed directly with cement, and the suspended solids will be incorporated into the rigid matrices of the hardened concrete. This process is especially effective for waste with high levels of toxic metals since at the pH of the cement mixture, most multivalent cations are converted into insoluble hydroxides or carbonates. Metal ions also may be incorporated into the crystalline structure of the cement minerals that form. Materials in the waste (such as sulfides, asbestos, latex and solid plastic wastes) may actually increase the strength and stability of the waste concrete. It is also effective for high-volume, low-toxic, radioactive wastes. [Pg.180]

Interaction is exothermic, and if air is present, incandescence may occur with freshly prepared granular material. Admixture with oxygen causes a violent explosion [1], Soda-lime, used to absorb hydrogen sulfide, will subsequently react with atmospheric oxygen and especially carbon dioxide (from the solid coolant) with a sufficient exotherm in contact with moist paper wipes (in a laboratory waste bin) to cause ignition [2], Spent material should be saturated with water before separate disposal.
