The SL-EPR test was pioneered by Clark (32). Figure 38 shows the results from an extensive study by Majidi and Streicher (32) that compared the results of SL-EPR testing to those from the ASTM ferric sulfate test. One can see that at low levels of sensitization, the SL-EPR test is much more discriminating, though for severely sensitized steel, the electrochemical test results saturate. Since it is usually more important to And low levels of sensitization, EPR tests are becoming increasingly popular.

If made from arsenical phosphorus, and commercial phosphorus is usually arsenical, it is contaminated with arsenic acid, whose presence may be recognized by Marsh s test (q. v.). The acid should not respond to the indigo and ferrous sulfate tests for HNO,.

This precipitate is colloidal and gives a fairly stable suspension. The size of the crystals and the appearance of the suspension is somewhat dependent on the exact way the sulfate test solution and the barium reagent are mixed. Sulfite and dithionit (8204 ) will give a similar reaction and iodate, selenate, and wolframate will do likewise in certain concentrations, and in cases where it is relevant to exclude these, the suspension obtained is used as a test solution for test (b). 

Blaylock and Frank (30) recently reported static renewal studies with eggs and larvae of the carp (Cyprinus carpio), which were treated with nickel sulfate. Test water and toxicant were renewed at 24-h intervals. Carp larvae that hatched from untreated eggs were exposed to nickel concentrations of 1-10 mg/liter, and median lethal concentrations were determined for exposure periods that varied from 72 to 257 h. The LC50 determined at 184 h was 3.18 mg Ni/liter, and this was in close agreement with the LC50 of 2.78 mg/liter determined in 7-day tests with embryo-larval stages of the goldfish (Table II).
