Suicide attacks

The spontaneous flaming of WP in air can also be made more reliable when a eutectic mixt of 55% WP with 45% phosphorus sesquisulfide (P4S3) is formed. This material (mp 40°, d 1.84g/cc) was used in WWII in one-shot flame throwers designed to protect tanks against suicide attacks by infantry (El Antipersonnel Tank Protector) (Ref 4, p 27)... 

These additions present CR as a faithful Fleming-esque movie, with distinct post 9/11 undertones. While said attacks were given merely a cursory mention in DAD, with CR they become integral to Le Chiffie s scheme of making money using the same financial conditions brought about by 9/11. Indeed, an attempted suicide attack on an aeroplane at Miami International Airport could be seen as eerily reminiscent of that infamous Tuesday morning in 2001.

What has become one of the hallmarks of suicide attack is deliberate inclusion of material for its fragmentation effect. Nuts, nails and ball bearings are all typical of the readily available arsenal of the bomb-maker and cause a great deal of the secondary injury seen in these attacks. 

Allenic amino acids belong to the classical suicide substrates for the irreversible mechanism-based inhibition of enzymes [5], Among the different types of allenic substrates used for enzyme inhibition [128, 129], the deactivation of vitamin B6 (pyr-idoxal phosphate)-dependent decarboxylases by a-allenic a-amino acids plays an important role (Scheme 18.45). In analogy with the corresponding activity of other /3,y-unsaturated amino acids [102,130], it is assumed that the allenic amino acid 139 reacts with the decarboxylase 138 to furnish the imine 140, which is transformed into a Michael acceptor of type 141 by decarboxylation or deprotonation. Subsequent attack of a suitable nucleophilic group of the active site then leads to inhibition of the decarboxylase by irreversible formation of the adduct 142 [131,132].
