After use, herbicides decompose slowly, and so affect cultivated plants for many years. Catechol occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables such as onions, apples and crude beet sugar, and in trees such as pine, oak and willow. Catechol may be released to the environment during its manufacture and use. It has been detected at low levels in ambient and urban air, groundwater, drinking-water and soil samples. It has been foimd in wastewaters from coal conversion, coal-tar chemical production and bituminous shale (United States National Library of Medicine, 1997). It is present in cigarette smoke at 100-360 gg per cigarette (lARC, 1986). 

NIR has been applied for determining dry matter of onion [11], soluble solids of cantaloupe [12], and sugar contents of peach [13] and Satsuma mandarin [14],... 

These two chemicals were among 35 active derivatives selected for further evaluation in the held in order to differentiate between the various compounds, establish a complete and accurate prohle for each, and separate the promising ones from less than superior candidates with respect to their potential as commercial herbicides. Between the various triazine analogs, several were found to be identical in some biological characteristics. The ability of plants to degrade SeMet to the DMSe is strongly species-dependent and represents a detoxification mechanism. However, Se volatilization may also result in losses of Se from food crops, aggravating Se deficiency in low-Se regions. Rice, broccoli and cabbage volatilized at the highest rates (200-350 pig Se/m2 leaf area per day) and sugar beet, bean, lettuce and onion volatilized at lowest rates (Terry et al., 1992).

Combine the sugar, oil, vinegar, and salt in a large bowl. Add the beans and onions and toss to coat them thoroughly. Refrigerate them in a large, covered container at least overnight. Stir the salad once or twice to develop the full flavor.
