Sugarcane is cultivated in tropical and semitropical regions, eg, Central and South America, Cuba, India, Australia, Africa, and the Far East. Sugarbeets are grown in more temperate climates such as North America, Europe, and the former Soviet Union. In some nations, eg, the United States, China, and Japan, sucrose is produced from both sources. [Pg.3]

Historically, tillage and hand weeding were the main methods of weed control. Since the advent of herbicide use in 1950, essentially all sugarcane in Australia now receives one or more herbicide applications. The distinction between the isotopic compositions of n-alkanes from land-plants having different metabolic pathways has been used by Bird et al. (1995) to trace the history of changes in the amounts of C3 and C4 plants in the watershed of the Johnstone River, northern Queensland, Australia. Clearing of the original forests for sugarcane production and pastures is recorded in a +3%o shift in the values of n-alkanes isolated from river sediments deposited since the late 18(X) s. A smaller shift of + l%o that occurs in sediments... [Pg.260]
