Suffering choices made

Thus far, I have been describing the path toward medication as an emotionally complicated and difficult choice made in the face of desperation. Although people may feel coerced into a relationship with drugs by the severity of their symptoms, they have, in the end, still made a choice. The situation is different when mental illness appears in its most vicious forms in such cases a sufferer s relationship with medication may begin, literally, as an instance of involuntary commitment ... [Pg.72]

All stage-to-stage methods that work from both ends of the column toward the middle suffer from two other disadvantages. First, the top-down and the bottom-up calculations must me somewhere in the column. Usually the mesh is made at a feed stage, and if more than one feed stage exists, a choice of mesh point must be made for each component. When the components vary widely in volatility, the same mesh point cannot be used for all components if serious numerical difficulties are to be avoided. Second, arbitrary procedures must be set up to handle nondlstrihuted components. (A nondistributed component is one whose concentration in one of the end-product streams is smaller than the smallest number carried by the computer.) In the LM and TG equations, the concentrations for these components do not natur ly take on nonzero values at the proper point as the calculations proceed through the column. [Pg.1278]

It is expected that formulation scientists will use this information to benchmark their internal development protocols and reduce the time required to file by adopting formulae that have survived the test of time. Many of us who have worked in the pharmaceutical industry suffer from a fixed paradigm when it comes to selecting formulations Not invented here perhaps is kept in the back of the minds of many seasoned formulations scientists when they prefer certain platforms for development. It is expected that with a quick review of the formulation possibilities that are made available in this book such scientists would benefit from the experience of others. For teachers of formulation sciences this series offers a wealth of information. Whether it is selection of a preservative system or the choice of a disintegrant, the series offers many choices to study and consider. [Pg.241]

As with all procedures involving living animals, important considerations in the choice of method are the ethical issues surrounding it. Most regulatory bodies have made pronouncements on this subject, and the reader should consult these documents for more detailed information. However, the guiding principles are to use as few animals as necessary and to avoid suffering as much as possible. [Pg.17]

This procedure suffers from a high degree of arbitrariness in the choice of just which configurations are deemed important. The calculation can be made somewhat more objective by including all excitations between a subset of occupied MOs and a subset of vacant orbitals. (These excitations are subject to certain restrictions as to multiplicity or order of excitation.) The orbitals chosen for the excitations are referred to as the active space , and the method is dubbed Complete Active Space Self Consistent Field (CASSCF) - ". Both MCSCF and CASSCF provide a certain fraction of the correlation energy, relative to a single configuration, Hartree-Fock, calculation. [Pg.10]

Improving his diet was important to me because he had been eating like this for 30 years and was feeling the effects of his poor choices, whether he made the connection to his diet or not. He complained of fatigue and headaches on a daily basis. He could no longer finish runs or bike rides without feeling like his muscles had shut down. He suffered from insomnia, and when he did sleep, it was disrupted by leg cramps. Yet by all outward appearances, he was a healthy man. [Pg.104]

The metered-dose aerosol inhaler is not only a most convenient system for the delivery of therapeutically active drugs but it has proven to be a life-saving device for many asthmatics. This system has made it possible for millions of asthma sufferers to lead normal lives. The convenience of self-administering a dose of drug accurately and quickly has made the metered-dose aerosol the dosage form of choice for the delivery of drugs to the respiratory system. From epinephrine to albuterol, from triamcinolone to flunisolide, from proteins and peptides to hormones, this dosage form has proven its value. [Pg.11]

You have no choice. Bill, replies Bob. You made a mistake and now have to suffer the consequences. Also, if you withhold this information and it is discovered later, the situation becomes ten times worse. ... [Pg.897]

Previous sections have already made the case for acquiring COSY data such that it may be presented in the phase-sensitive mode. The pure-absorption lineshapes associated with this provide the highest possible resolution and allow one to extract information from the fine-structure within crosspeak multiplets. However, it was also pointed out that the basic COSY-90 sequence suffers from one serious drawback in that diagonal peaks possess dispersion-mode lineshapes when crosspeaks are phased into pure absorption-mode. The broad tails associated with these can mask crosspeaks that fall close to the diagonal, so there is potential for useful information to be lost. The presence of dispersive contributions to the diagonal may be (largely) overcome by the use of the double-quantum filtered variant of COSY [37], and for this reason DQF-COSY is the experiment of choice for recording phase-sensitive COSY data. [Pg.189]

With the major aspects of explosive manufacture discussed in a fairly general way, it is now time to move on to a specific example to illustrate the points that have been made. The example that will be used is methyl nitrate. This choice is not to be construed as an endorsement for methyl nitrate. On the contrary, methyl nitrate is an inferior explosive. While it is very powerful and made from very simple materials, it suffers from twin liabilities that make it unsuitable for most uses. Strike number one is that it is difficult to purify. It must be distilled to reach a good state of purity. This is definitely not recommended. In fact, it is a good recipe for a devastating explosion. [Pg.18]
