Sucralfate drug interactions

Assess for potential drug interactions whenever there is a change in the patient s medications, particularly for patients taking cimetidine, omeprazole, or sucralfate.

Drug Interactions Various drugs can decrease T absorption. Drugs such as aluminum hydroxide, ferrous sulfate, sucralfate, and calcium carbonate should be separated from T administration by 1 to 2 hours. Bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine and colestipol) must be separated from T by at least 4 hours and preferably 6 hours. CYP450 enzyme inducing drugs such as phenytoin, carba-mazepine, rifampin, and phenobarbital can increase T requirements. 

H2-receptor antagonists are preferred for prophylaxis of SRMB. A large landmark study demonstrated that intravenous ranitidine was superior to oral sucralfate in preventing SRMB. Moreover, ranitidine did not increase the risk for nosocomial pneumonia, as the incidence of pneumonia was no different between the two treatment groups. In itself, critical illness places the patient at risk for nosocomial pneumonia. Also there are potential problems associated with sucralfate therapy (e.g., constipation, clogging tubes, hypophosphatemia, and drug interactions). ...

Drugs that may interact with nalidixic acid include theophylline, caffeine, oral anticoagulants, bacteriostatic agents, probenecid, antacids (containing magnesium, aluminum, and calcium), sucralfate, iron salts, multivitamins containing zinc, didanosine, antiarrhythmic agents, and melphalan.
