The simplest example is that of tire shallow P donor in Si. Four of its five valence electrons participate in tire covalent bonding to its four Si nearest neighbours at tire substitutional site. The NMR determination in strongly acidic medium (trifluoroacetic acid) of the chemical shifts of the protons in the 4- or 5-position can be used to establish a reactivity scale. Evidently, the transition state for acid-catalyzed epoxide opening has an Sn2 -like geometry but also has a large amount of S]v-l-like carbocationic character- Since the positive charge in the protonated epoxide is shared by the more highly substituted carbon atom, backside attack of Br- occurs at the more highly substituted site. 

Styrenes may act as 2n and 4n components of the Diels-Alder reaction depending on the substitution site and the electronic effects of the substituent. Electron-donating groups at the a-carbon of the olefinic double bond enhance the dienic reactivity of styrenes [30]. 

Dimerization of unsaturated fatty acids, to. so-called dimer acids, is widely practised in industry, where acid-treated clays are invariably used as a catalyst. In the case of oleic acid the major products are dimers, trimers, and isosteric acid. Koster et al. (1998) have investigated the relative importance of the various acid sites as well as structural and textural parameters of montmorrilonite. The interlamellar space dominates the oleic acid dimerization and the active site is the tetrahedrol substitution site. 

The second extrathermodynamic method that we discuss here differs from Hansch analysis by the fact that it does not involve experimentally derived substitution constants (such as o, log P, MR, etc.). The method was originally developed by Free and Wilson [29] and has been simplified by Fujita and Ban [30]. The subject has been extensively reviewed by Martin [7] and by Kubinyi [8]. The method is also called the de novo approach, as it is derived from first principles rather than from empirical observations. The underlying idea of Free-Wilson analysis is that a particular substituent group at a specific substitution site on the molecule contributes a fixed amount to the biological activity (log 1/C). In a broad sense, one may include the Free-Wilson equation within the class of linear free energy relationships (LFER). It is also subjected to the assumption of additivity of the contributions to the biological activity by substituent groups at different substitution sites. The assumption requires, for example, that there is no hydrogen bonding interaction between the various substitution groups. 

The Free-Wilson analysis provides more site-specific information than a Hansch analysis. It is recommended to carry out a Free-Wilson analysis first in order to obtain an idea of the importance of the substituent groups and of the sensitivity of the substitution sites. This type of analysis can be regarded as being qualitative, as it points to the important pharmacophores in the molecule. Montanari el al., for example, studied a Co—H-MFI sample through FT-IR spectroscopy of in situ adsorption and coadsorption of probe molecules [o-toluonitrile (oTN), CO and NO] and CH4-SCR process tests under IR operando conditions. The oTN adsorption and the oTN and NO coadsorption showed that both Co2+ and Co3+ species are present on the catalyst surface. Co3+ species are located inside the zeolitic channels while Co2+ ions are distributed both at the external and at the internal surfaces. The operando study showed the activity of Co3+ sites in the reaction. The existence of three parallel reactions, CH4-SCR, CH4 total oxidation and NO to NOz oxidation, was also confirmed. Isocyanate species and nitrate-like species appear to be intermediates of CH4-SCR and NO oxidation, respectively. A mechanism for CH4-SCR has been proposed. On the contrary, Co2+ substitutional sites, very evident and predominant in the catalyst, which are very hardly reducible, seemed not to play a key role in the SCR process [173],... 

Both the 12C/13C primary KIE and the 14N/15N secondary KIE have been determined (Table 4-2) [19, 20], with the immediate adjacent atoms about the isotopic substitution site quantized as well. To our knowledge, we are not aware of any such simulations prior to our work for a condensed phase reaction with converged secondary heavy isotope effects.
