Substituent groups, naming

Element substituent group names are formed by adding the suflix -io to the stem of the name (compare anion name formation). 

Zou et al. [193] have explored the QSAR of the antifimgal profile of 5- [ l-aryl- l,4-dihydro-6-methylpyridazin-4-one-3-yl] -2-arylamino-1,3,4-thiadiazoles (Fig. 32, Table 22) in terms of the sum of the physicochemical properties of all the substituent groups namely, hydrophobic effects ( n), meta- and para- Hammett s sigma constants steric effects ( Es), and the inductive effects (J]F)-... 

Example 2 illustrates how coordination by the two terminal primary amino groups of the ligand is indicated by placing the kappa index after the substituent group name and within the effect of the bis doubling prefix. The appearance of the simple index kN after the ethane-1,2-diamine indicates the binding by only one of the two equivalent secondary amino nitrogen atoms. 

There are two methods for constructing substituent group names from parent hydride names ... 

Metallocene derivatives may be named either by the standard organic suffix (functional) nomenclature or by prefix nomenclature. The organic functional suffix system is described in Section P-33 of Ref. 3. Metallocene substituent group names have endings ocenyl , ocenediyl , ocenetriyl , etc. 

Group C—Substituent Groups Named Bv Prefix Only... 

For secondary, tertiary, and quarternary amines, the naming convention is a bit different, but the suffixes are the same. For symmetrical amines, the di" or "tri" prefix is used depending on whether there are 2 or 3 substituents. For example, dipropylamine or triphenylamine. For asymmetric amines, the parent chain gets the -amine suffix. This name is then prefixed with N- (indicating the nitrogen bond) and the substituent group name, for each substituent, using alphabetic order for tertiary amides. For example, N-ethyl-N-methyl-propylamine, not N-methyl-N-ethyl-propylamine.

The first part of this table lists substituent groups and their line formulas. A substituent group is defined by lUPAC as a group that replaces one or more hydrogen atoms attached to a parent structure. Such groups are sometimes called radicals, but lUPAC now reserves the term radical for a free molecular species with unpaired electrons. lUPAC does not recommend some of these names, which are marked here with asterisks (e.g., amyl ), but they are included in this list because they are often encountered in the older literature.
